GED Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Why do I need a GED?

A. Many employers regard the GED as equivalent to a high school diploma and use both of these as a standard to be met before employment. It also indicates the ability to comprehend and analyze written material, understand and solve basic math problems, and ability to communicate ideas in a written form and with good English grammar. These are all important factors in becoming a good employee.

 

Q. How many tests make up the GED?

A. There are five subjects: Reading, Writing, Math, Science and Social Studies

 

Q. How long is each test?

A. Registration: 20 – 30 min.   Reading: 1 hr. 5 min.
Writing: 2 hours   Math: 1 hr. 30 min.
Science: 1 hr. 20 min.   Social Studies: 1 hr. 10 min.

 

Q. How much does GED testing cost?

A. Initial test is $75. Retakes are $15 per test. Tulalip Tribes Higher Education will pay the fee for Tulalip Tribes members. Contact Roseann Green at 360- 651-4320.

 

Q. Where do I take the test?

A. Tests are given on the Everett Community College campus in the Parks Student Union Building, Room 308 (3rd floor). See Jim Shaeffer, 651-3205, for a map and schedule of test times.

 

Q. What do I need to bring with me to a GED the test?

A. First, pay your $75 at the Cashier's Office in the Jackson Building (see map from Instructor). Take your receipt to the Testing Center. For registration, you need to bring your official photo ID (driver's license, state ID, military ID, tribal card, or passport). Bring your Social Security card or your EvCC student ID number.

 

Q. Do I need an appointment to take a GED test?

A. No. All tests are first-come-first-served. Arrive 15-30 minutes early.

 

Q. Is there an age limit for GED testing.

A. You must be at least 16 to take the test. If under 19 years of age, you will need a permission form signed by the school last attended

 

Q. How do I prepare for a GED test? Is preparation required?

A. the Adult Basic Education Department at EvCC offers preparation classes. Tulalip classes are held at the South Lot building (see Spring GED flyer for schedule). You can also study at home; most bookstores have GED preparation books to choose from. Internet sites may also help (try www.gedpractice.com). Preparation is not required, and if you feel you are ready, you can simply register and begin testing.
