The Tulalip predecessor tribes were among the signers of the Treaty of Point Elliott (1855). In this treaty the tribes ceded thousands of square miles of land in exchange for limited payments and federal protection. Critically, the treaty reserved the tribes' rights to fish and hunt. Federal courts have affirmed those reserved rights and recognized Tribal co‑management authority with the State of Washington over fish and wildlife resources. The mission of Tulalip Natural Resources is to carry out this co‑management responsibility consistent with treaty rights and the protection and perpetuation of the resources on which the people have depended for over ten thousand years.
